when the last light goes out

lyrics

I keep my window open wide
So the pitch that's brewed can pour inside
I keep my eyes open wide
To fight the deep and frozen tide

But I'm anchored to a hide...
And slipping off the floe

I leaned a little out the window
Saw my body down below
Eleven stories to the bottom
I never thought I'd fall so fast
And in that dark and dreadful glimpse
Of what it is to not exist
With twisted limbs to sleep forever
On wet cement and broken glass

I'd sleep beneath a waterfall
Of sewage pipes along the wall

But I'd prefer to lay awake
And dream about another's shape
I feel her hands caressing mine
Another place, another time

As my pupils dilate
Shadows shifting alter state
And drifting on the body's weight
My ears defy this heavy fate

Skimming swiftly over sheets
And soft stones on cobbled streets
They perch outside a tiny room
And bask in the spell of night in bloom

And the neighbors' gliding silhouettes
Creaking beds and heavy breath
Sweep the bread crumbs making way
For radios and cigarettes
